GEORGE RAFF

Born 15th April 1815, Forres, Morayshire, Scotland and arrived in London aboard the

“Earl Durham” and arrived on 2nd January 1839

 in Port Jackson.

He worked for John de Villiers Lamb who was a merchant, pastoralist and businessman before moving to Victoria with his brother Alexander, then back to NSW in 1845 .

He married Harriett Sealy Bourne on 14th April 1843, at Presbyterian Scotts Church in Sydney, NSW.  Finally moving to Brisbane on 9th April 1851 with his wife and 3 children at that time.

He took up 2500 acres along the banks of the Caboolture River that he called “Moray Field Park” next to Capt Whish’s “Oaklands” and commenced operations as a cotton farmer, however this did not go well and he changed to growing sugar.

The plantation consisted of a large mansion, manager’s house, houses for married workman and their families, labourers’ huts, stockyards, stables, sheds, carpenters’ shop, blacksmiths’ shop, butchers’ shop, bakers’ shop, stores, sawmill and carriage house.  He had the entire plantation connected by rail even to his own wharf on the river.

He constructed a distillery for the production of rum or strong spirits for the Colony.

He represented Brisbane 1859 in the first Queensland Parliament and was also the Chairman of the Caboolture Divisional Board 1880.

He died on 28th August 1889 and is buried in Toowong Cemetery.
